They form the lightest peal of eight Church bells in Lincolnshire.

N.B. Limited ringing on the Seventh (This is due to a loose gudgeon).
Visiting bands will not be given permission (or be allowed) to ring the seventh at the present time!
A restoration scheme and rehang of the bells is currently being looked into, with fundraising taking place.

Metheringham Church
Metheringham Church

St. Wilfrid's Church is located on the edge of the center of the old Village and is set back off the High Street. It is not easy to find as the Church has a small tower and there are no roads up to the Church (only footpaths).

Parking can be a bit tricky as there are no roads up to the Church. You can park on the High Street or on Drury Street which is just off the High Street by the Doctors Surgery. Do Not park down Church Walk (which is a dead end).

We use the main Church door.

The White Hart Inn (High Street, Metheringham, LN4 3DZ)

Bell / Ringing Info

Handling:
.              The bells are very difficult to handle due to the long unguided draft of rope. This is not helped by the light weight of the bells which
make them very flighty indeed and difficult to ring.

Go of Bells:           The bells go quite well but are hung on plain bearings. The main problem is the long unguided draft of rope and flightiness of the bells.
They are not easy to ring and stays are often broken!

Striking:.               The bells are not easy to strike well due to the odd-struckness of the bells. The second and fourth are particularly odd-struck.

Sound:..                 They are not a particularly musical peal of bells and are not very rewarding. This is mainly down to the old / poor back bells. To listen
to a short recording of the bells click here.

Fittings etc:          The bells are hung in a cast iron H frame from metal headstocks and plain bearings - John Taylor & Co 1912.

History of the Bells:          In 1620 Paul Hutton of Congleton cast four bells (the present back four). In 1830 William Dobson of Downham Market
augmented the bells to five by casting a new treble. In 1912 John Taylor & Co of Loughborough rehung the bells in a new
cast iron H frame and augmented them to eight by casting three new trebles to form the present peal of eight bells.
